Happy Earth Month

April 15, 2023

Earth Month is a chance to raise awareness and stand up for change on the issues that impact our planet. We know that climate change disproportionally impacts the LGBTQ+ community (and other historically marginalized communities) and that more awareness and work are needed around the intersection of environmental and social justice. We can be inspired to advocate for sustainability by the many LGBTQ+ leaders and organizations who have and continue to make a difference in promoting a healthier and better world.

This year’s Earth Day (April 22nd) theme is “Invest in Our Planet.” Here are a few ways to invest your time and energy to help our planet and encourage others to do the same:

  1. Join a clean-up! Hudson Valley Parent’s event calendar has a list of clean-ups and other family-friendly Earth Day events.
  2. Educate yourself on NYS Green Initiatives & important legislative efforts and tell your elected officials to support laws that fight climate change.
  3. Plant native greenery and flowers that attract pollinators, enrich the soil, and provide food for wildlife. A list of New York’s native plants can be found here.
  4. Be a climate communicator. Calling out for climate action has been shown to inspire others to do the same. Check out the Earth Day Initiative to learn how.
